Scott Wilson, the actor who many knew in recent years as Hershel Greene from The Walking Dead, has died at the age of 76.
The Walking Dead‘s official Twitter account confirmed it, though the tweet doesn’t mention anything about the cause or time of death. Wilson was a star on the show until his character’s demise in Season 4, but Hershel’s remained a fan-favorite ever since.
“We are deeply saddened to report that Scott Wilson, the incredible actor who played Hershel on #TheWalkingDead, has passed away at the age of 76,” the show’s tweet read. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in paradise, Scott. We love you!”

A subsequent statement from AMC, provided to The Hollywood Reporter, expresses similar sentiments.
Scott will always be remembered as a great actor, and we all feel fortunate to have known him as an even better person. The character he embodied on The Walking Dead, Hershel, lived at the emotional core of the show. Like Scott in our lives, Hershel was a character whose actions continue to inform our characters’ choices to this day. Our hearts go out to his wife, family, friends and to the millions of fans who loved him. Scott will be missed.
Wilson was a prolific actor until the end, with more than 80 film and TV credits to his name. He may have been most recognized for The Walking Dead, but more recently he also played key roles in Bosch, CSI, Damien, and Netflix’s The OA.
Wilson’s career goes back to the late ’60s, when he made his debut in In the Heat of the Night and then had a starring role in In Cold Blood (both from 1967). He went on to fill memorable roles in a number of big films, including Dead Man Walking, The Great Gatsby (1974), and The Ninth Configuration, the last of which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
As news of Wilson’s death made the rounds on social media, friends, colleagues, and fans all stepped up to share their happy memories of the actor.
Scott Wilson was one of the finest character actors of all time. So subtle, so real, I never saw him make a false move- EVER. When I met him I wasn’t prepared for his warmth & kindness or his ability to instantly make me feel like a lifelong friend. #RIPScottWilson pic.twitter.com/LZWDeUIYzk
